JPJQ always surprises, excites, pleases and engages audiences with their unique blend of tradition, ingenuity, and joyful noise. Anchored by vocalist Julia Pinckney Jones and bassist/arranger Adam R Jones and featuring drummer Timothy VanCleave and guitarist Alexander Margitich, this international quartet specializes in cross-genre, postmodern interpretations of popular songs, pairing new arrangements in vintage styles with polished and tested classic jazz.
Born and raised in western Canada but now living in Portland, OR, Pinckney Jones' voice is an unapologetic departure from the "smoky-voiced chanteuses" that have become omnipresent in today's jazz scene. With a powerful voice that owes as much to Aretha as to Billie or Ella, her live performances are riveting - emotionally raw and soulful, while always embodying the sheer joy of making music and sharing it with an audience.
"Wonderful when a band can bring it onstage like they do on the record, and vice versa." - Anita Eccleston, trumpeter, vocalist and jazz blogger
